A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Town of Apple River on November 7, 2024. The request was made by us at Northwoods Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The specific records requested under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., were a list of new registrations voters that registered to vote on November 5, 2024. We sought these records preferably in an electronic format for ease of access and dissemination.
As members of the media, we are involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals. We are awaiting a response from the Town of Apple River regarding this request and will continue our efforts to provide comprehensive coverage of local government affairs.
