Heart attacks remain a major health concern in the United States, causing over a million deaths each year. Among these, ST-elevation myocardial infarctions (STEMI) are considered particularly severe due to their high risk of complications and mortality. Immediate diagnosis and intervention are essential for improving patient outcomes during a STEMI.
In June 2025, Buck Neibauer experienced a STEMI heart attack without the typical chest pain symptoms. His wife, Kat, recognized that something was wrong and called emergency services despite his reluctance. The Ashland Fire Department responded quickly, suspecting a heart attack and beginning treatment before transporting him to Tamarack Health Ashland Medical Center.
Dr. Rachel Lange was among the physicians who treated Buck in the emergency room. Her prompt actions led to the identification of the STEMI, and she coordinated with her team and first responders to ensure Buck was transferred rapidly to Duluth for cardiac catheterization and stent placement.
On September 12, Dr. Lange received the Duluth Region STEMI Survivor Award in recognition of her role in saving Buck’s life. The award ceremony included Buck and Kat Neibauer as well as members of the Ashland Fire Department who assisted with his care.
“I’m so grateful to everyone who saved my life,” said Buck Neibauer at the event. “I shouldn’t be here today, and because of you all, I am.”
The collaborative efforts between Dr. Lange, hospital staff, emergency responders, and partners in Duluth were credited with ensuring timely treatment for Buck’s condition.
