A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Town of Chippewa, Wisconsin, regarding new voter registrations on November 7, 2024. The request specifically asked for a list of voters who registered on Election Day, November 5, 2024.
As part of our commitment at Northwoods Reporter to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we sought these records under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., preferably in electronic format.
We believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we consider ourselves eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
