With four decades of experience in healthcare leadership, Mike Schafer, the Chief Executive Officer of Spooner Health for 34 years, was honored with two prestigious awards during a board meeting on February 5, 2025. The recognition underscores his dedication to rural healthcare.

Eric Borgerding, President and CEO of the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA), presented Schafer with WHA’s 2024 Distinguished Service Award. This accolade is annually awarded to a healthcare executive who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to their community.

Unexpectedly, Borgerding also bestowed upon Schafer the 2024 American Hospital Association (AHA) Grassroots Champion Award. This award is given to one individual each year in the state and highlights Schafer's efforts in engaging legislators about public policy issues impacting hospitals nationwide and in Wisconsin. Borgerding highlighted "the meaningful relationships that Mike has built with legislators over the years."
