University of Wisconsin-Superior issued the following announcement on Feb 11.
The 2022 Lake Superior Ice Festival featured a variety of activities and events that ranged from sledding and ice skating to a hot air balloon demonstration, ice racing and a dog show. One of the more unique events featured the UW-Superior Music Department Ice Instrument Percussion Ensemble performing on instruments made of ice.
This group, led by Dr. Brett Jones, UW-Superior professor and Music Department chair, also included UW-Superior graduates Johnny Erickson and Cory Coffman, Jeremy Craycraft, percussion professor at The College of St. Scholastica; and Henry Eichman who teaches percussion at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
The instruments represented in ice form included a kettle drum, xylophone, maraca, shaker and snare drum.
“These were not only fun to make music with, the excellent carving, headed by Paul Salmon, created beautiful works of art in these instruments,” said Jones.
