On January 10, 2025, Spooner Health hosted a meeting with three state legislators to address the challenges of rural healthcare in Wisconsin. The attending representatives were Dave Armstrong, Chanz Green, and Duke Tucker. Kyle O’Brien from the Wisconsin Hospital Association also participated alongside Spooner Health's leadership team.

The discussion centered on workforce shortages, the role of intermediaries in healthcare costs, strategies for strengthening rural hospitals amidst closures due to low profit margins, and prioritizing patient-focused care while dealing with insurance processes.

Mike Schafer, CEO of Spooner Health, emphasized their mission: “At Spooner Health, we exist to provide excellent medical care and services to our community and surrounding area.” He noted the importance of such meetings with legislators to explore ways to fortify healthcare systems.

Kyle O’Brien stressed the need for policymakers to understand hospital challenges through direct engagement. “Wisconsin hospitals, like Spooner Health, are tireless advocates for their patients, providers, and staff. The best way for legislators to comprehend the real challenges hospitals face right now is by seeing and hearing about them firsthand,” he stated.

Spooner Health expressed gratitude towards Representatives Armstrong, Green, Tucker, and Mr. O’Brien for their visit and interest in understanding local healthcare issues.
